Night Shooting

This one shows the possibilities for night shooting. The director makes a point of saying that there are no lights being used here. This is how much you can do with manual exposure/aperture controls.

DSLR Documentary Examples

Shooting with a DSLR (the Canon T3i) is tricky, and very different from using a camcorder. We will watch this film in class (New Media Ethnography) - to give more of a sense of how DSLR videos diverge from typical videography. The shallow depth of field is fairly common, as this award winning video shows. Also, the issues with manual focusing come into play here, too. But, watch how the filmmaker uses it to his advantage. Though its visually jarring, the focusing issues actually add to the emotional immersion that the film achieves through narrative as well.
